Colonel Charles "Chinese" Gordon was overrun by the Mahdi while waiting for support from the queen after having been sent to evacuate British citizens from the region. The Sudanese defenders were compensated in notes that were personally signed and backed by Gordon. Later, the notes were signed by hectograph.
