Pedro II 640 Reis 1699-(R) XF40 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM90.1, LMB-136a, Bentes-76.04. Horizontal reverse variety. Elusive to most collectors, with the last specimen sold at Heritage unsurprisingly coming out of the Paulistana Collection. The current example is likely one of the finest and most attractive of this variety. Striking golden iridescence permeates the surfaces that seemingly flash at the turn of the wrist; scattered patches of argent and icy-blue tones decorate the low-lying fields. Typical quality control issues commonly associated with an imperfect planchet are prominent, yet add character to this already aesthetically interesting issue.
