Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1702/1-P Clipped NGC, Pernambuco mint, KM99, LMB-39. 7.13gm. The 4000 Reis of 1702 was the only gold coin struck at the Pernambuco mint (P), which primarily produced silver coins (mostly 640 Reis) in the short period that it operated from 1700 to 1702, marking gold issues from there as ones of particular importance to the wider Brazilian series. Despite NGC's "clipped" notation, we find no evidence of clipping, and it is possible that this was meant rather to imply slight edge filing, though even this is not readily apparent in the current holder placement. The offering appears only lightly circulated, preserving glistening mint luster within the fields, a delightful plum-red tone enhancing the peripheries.
