Eichstätt - Bishopric. Sede Vacante 2 Taler 1790-W MS67 NGC, Nürnberg mint, KM95, Dav-2212, Gebert-106. 55.98gm. By Johann Peter Werner. Simply incredible, and a coin that should not exist--its expansiveness, commemorative nature, and shear age all usually leading to a coin of this size suffering marks, cleaning, and frequent use in jewelry. And yet, we have the present piece. Essentially as crisp as it must have been when it first left the mint, the surfaces on the obverse and reverse alike beam with crisp, clean silver luster, not a trace of tone observable anywhere throughout the design. The final Sede Vacante issue produced prior to the secularization of the bishopric, it is hardly a surprise that this selection should be the finest certified. We have only ever offered one other emission of Eichstätt in comparable quality (a 1757 Sede Vacante Taler), with the next finest for this date we've seen being an MS65, which realized $8,400 in our January 2019 NYINC sale.
