Great Britain
William & Mary gold "Elephant & Castle" 5 Guineas 1692 AU53 NGC, KM479.2, S-3423, Schneider-Unl. A gratifyingly lustrous, gently circulated representative of this imposing gold type, issued under the joint reign of William and Mary only a few years after the "Glorious Revolution", which saw James II deposed from the throne of England. The characteristic hallmark of the type, the elephant and castle after which it is named, indicates the Royal African Company as the source of its gold. The issue may thus be considered both a highly historical relic of England's earlier colonial enterprises, as well as a clear and well-cared-for numismatic rarity. Though consistent friction over the surfaces accounts for its AU grade, it is evident by the type's relatively shallow engraving style and abundance of watery luster that its actual duration spent in circulation must have been minimal. Indeed, fine detail remains throughout William's fine locks of hair, with only a single spot of modest flatness by his ear, and an otherwise profound sunset glow enlivening the fields with pleasing balance, visible at every angle of inspection. All said, a highly collectible selection of this coveted issue, undoubtedly destined for entry into an impressive type collection of British or world gold coinage.
