Great Britain
George III white-metal Pattern 5 Guineas 1777 MS61 NGC, KM-Pn57 var. (unlisted in white-metal), S-3723A var. (same), L&S-3 var. (same), W&R-78 var. (same). By Richard Yeo. A most intriguing trial from this fascinating period in the history of large-size British gold issues, and one which by all indications appears to be unique. As an overvaluation of gold during the period had already relegated the position of the 2 and 5 Guineas to purely Pattern issues due to their enormous purchasing power, it is hardly a stretch to see issues such as these as the first attempts by engravers such as Yeo to produce new designs for the coinage of the young George III. Indeed, white-metal strikings such as this are also known from Wyon's Pattern Three Graces Crown (see our August 2019 Auction #3075, lot 32220) and the Küchler's Pattern 1798 Dollar (see Auction World's July 2016 Auction 5, lot 1475). The fact that the present offering appears to have been produced using the same dies as W&R-78 further seems to confirm the piece's position as a trial for the "adopted" design seen in gold. Altogether missing from the extensive holdings of Herman Selig, we can only anticipate that interest this piece will pique amongst even seasoned British collectors.
