Victoria gold Proof Pattern Farthing 1887 PR63 Cameo PCGS, Peck-2200, Freeman-935 (R20), W&R-402 (R6). Plain edge. By Ludwig C. Lauer for Adolph Weyl. An astoundingly rare gold Pattern, postulated in Freeman to be unique, and by Wilson & Rasmussen to exist in a total mintage numbering only 3-5 examples. Collectors familiar with Victoria's gold 1887 jubilee issues will instantly recognize this portrait design, which varies notably from the circulation type in its style, presenting the Queen in lesser realism and in a more two-dimensional manner. The obverse displays the date to the obverse, split between the two sides of Victoria's crown, while the reverse designs are breathtakingly sharp, needle-point features projecting with precise clarity toward the viewer from every angle of inspection. Watery, golden surfaces, lightly dressed in silver and orange-gold tone, serve as a remarkable backdrop to the medallic features. A marvelous Pattern, and one whose immense beauty only enhances its sublime rarity.
Likely from the Murdoch Collection (Sotheby's March 1904, Lot 540 [part])
