Guatemala
Central American Republic gold 8 Escudos 1824 NG-M XF45 PCGS, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM8 (Rare), Fr-26 (Rare), Onza-1751 (Extremely Rare; this coin). A remarkable rarity within the Central American Republic 8 Escudos series, the issues of Nueva Guatemala ranking far above those of contemporary San Jose in terms of both their utter scarcity and desirability. One of only around 20 examples between the 1824 and 1825 that the Standard Catalog supposes exist in all grades, the coin at hand preserves an admirable level of quality for the certification, the sunface in particular remaining notably expressive. Made even more desirable for its use as the plate coin in Calico's La Onza, it is hardly an exaggeration to say that this type-date is a must for any serious collector of the series, with the other confirmed examples known to have graced such collections as Rudman, Lissner, Millennia, Hammel, Ulex, and Farouk.
