Guatemala
Republic gold Specimen Pattern 10 Pesos 1894-CB SP63 PCGS, Heaton mint, KM-Pn27, Fr-46. Mintage: 17. Large head, with "CB" and without ESSAI to the reverse. A very rare Pattern type, produced by the Heaton mint for the Guatemalan government in response to demand resulting from a lack of minting capacity in the country. Guatemala initially dealt with this shortage by countermarking coins for circulation, but it was soon recognized that a longer-term solution was needed, and so requests for proposals were sent to both the Paris Mint and the Heaton Mint. The design of the latter, represented by this offering, was ultimately chosen for its more "European" depiction of Liberty. With only 17 examples produced in total, the type ranks as one of the great rarities of the Guatemalan series. The offering presents needle-sharp detail within lustrous, watery golden fields, the surfaces decorated in opulent sunset-orange tone that concentrates subtly against the devices to accentuating effect. A very rare chance at ownership of this fascinating piece of Guatemalan numismatic history!
