Great Britain
Charles I gold Unite ND (1625-1626) MS61 NGC, Tower mint (under Charles I), Cross Calvary mm, KM151.1, S-2687, N-2148, Brooker-30 (same dies). 9.07gm. (cross calvary) • CAROLVS: D' • G' MAG' • BRIT' • FRA' • ET' • HI' • REX •, crowned, mantled bust of Charles left, XX (denomination) behind / (cross calvary) FLORENT CONCORDIA • REGNA •, crowned Stuart arms. An astounding grade for any gold type from Charles I's reign, and of the English Civil War in general, the prize nature of his Unite coinage unfortunately leaded to cleaning among past generations of collectors, if not outright use in jewelry contemporaneously. And yet, the present coin exhibits unmistakably Mint State characteristics. The flan is entirely lustrous and lined with die polish, a mild die shift creating little disturbance to the intelligibility of the legends, while the whole of the piece is near perfectly centered on a full flan. Certainly among the upper echelons of Charles I Unites we have handled, and a through-and-through gorgeous example. Sold with old CoinCraft tag.
