Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1773 Mo-FM XF40 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM142.1, Cal-1809 (prev. Cal-329). Variety with mintmark and assayer's initials inverted (upright) relative to the remainder of the legends. One of just three dates that this subtype was issued, and a remarkably challenging type-date on the whole, represented by fewer than a handful of examples appearing on auction over the last decade. We have handled only one previously, the Rudman example which certified VF Details (Damaged). Though admitting clear wear, the integral details of the designs all remain clear, a ring of rosaceous tone coloring the margins.
Ex. Eliasberg Collection (American Numismatic Rarities April 2005, Lot 3154); Purchased from Mortimer Hammel
