From 1844 Algiers benefited from a public lighting program based on oil. It was decided in 1850 to replace it with coal gas lighting. The first gas plant in Algiers, built on Tafourah beach between Algiers and Mustapha, was commissioned at the end of 1851. The first network consisted of a 12 km pipeline serving 280 nozzles. The inauguration of public gas lighting took place on January 11, 1852 at the Place du Gouvernement.
