BRUTTIUM. Rhegion. Circa 215-150 B.C. Æ tetras. 6.99 gm. 21 mm. Laureate head of Asklepios right / Hygieia standing left, feeding serpent from patera; III (mark of value) to left, ΡΗΓΙΝΩΝ to right. HN Italy 2560. SNG ANS 786-788. Very Fine; glossy green patina; fine style portrait of Asklepios well centered on a broad flan; interestingly overstruck probably on HN 2546, with areas of weak strike.
Asklepios is the god of medicine and healing. Serpents were sacred to him as they were associated with healing herbs. This interesting coin is overstruck on an earlier issue with a large flan.
