Middlesex 1040. Political and Social Series. Stanhope. Copper halfpenny. 10.14 gm. 29 mm. Bust left; STANHOPE NOBLE WITHOUT NOBILITY / Hampden's tomb, HAMPDEN & SIDNEY in an oval frame on the front, a radiated cap of liberty above; SACRED TO LIBERTY around. Edge milled. Good Extremely Fine; two small minor toning spots on obverse.

Charles Stanhope was third earl Stanhope. He supported liberty of conscience and freedom of religion and introduced a bill, unsuccessfully, in Parliament to make this law. John Hampden and Algernon Sidney (a contemporary of John Locke whose writings influenced colonial American thought) were 17th century British supporters of civil and religious freedom.
