Charles Stanhope was third earl Stanhope. He supported liberty of conscience and freedom of religion and introduced a bill, unsuccessfully, in Parliament to make this law. John Hampden and Algernon Sidney (a contemporary of John Locke whose writings influenced colonial American thought) were 17th century British supporters of civil and religious freedom.
