ISLANDS OFF THRACE. Thasos. After 148 B.C. Fourrée tetradrachm. 14.58 gm. 34 mm. Head of youthful Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath and taenia / Herakles standing left, nude but for lion's skin over his shoulder and left arm, resting hand on club; monogram to left. HGC 6, 359. Very Fine; toned; roughness and deposits, along with breaks in silver plating, exposing the base metal core; excellent style; extremely large flan. Dramatic and fascinating piece.

A fourrée is an ancient plated counterfeit struck with a base metal core and plated with the precious metal to make it look like the actual coin. They are fascinating, uncommon, and collectible in their own right. This is a rare and unusual example.
