According to Plutarch, "labrys" is the Lydian word for the ancient double-bitted war axe. Originally from Crete in Greece, it is one of the oldest symbols of Greek civilization, going back to the Bronze Age Minoans who flourished from c. 3000-1450 B.C. and ending around 1100 B.C.
