II. 23 24 SEPT. in four lines within pelleted circle; star below. Gadoury 3365; Maz. 1751b. 9.82g, 30mm, 12h.

Good Very Fine; pleasant patina. Scarce.

From the collection of the late Eduard Winkler.

Entering Paris as the Emperor Napoleon III on 2nd December 1852, Louis Napoleon married the Spanish aristocrat Marie Eugenie de Montijo in January 1853. Later that year the emperor and his new wife made an official visit to the important industrial region of Lille in the north of France, for which "the grateful city of Lille", as the reverse inscription proclaims, caused this type to be made. Although ostensibly commemorative, as they were struck on the 10 centimes module these pieces undoubtedly circulated as currency, making it challenging to find examples in good condition such as this.
