Germany, Hamm ZN Medal. Commemorating the inauguration of the Nagelgraf statue. 1916. Statue of Count Adolf I von der Mark to left, GRAF VON DER MARK in left field, IN EISEN HAMM. W. 1916 in right field / Blank. 9.55g, 30mm, 12h.

Near Extremely Fine; stained.

From the collection of the late Eduard Winkler.

During WWI there was a patriotic custom throughout the Austro-Hungarian and German Empires to raise money to support the troops.

This coin commemorates the Nagelgraf (nail count), an oak statue designed by the sculptor Leopold Fleischhacker which was erected in the market square of Hamm in 1916. It is representative of a wide-spread patriotic custom in the Austro-Hungarian and German Empires of 'war nailing' in which large objects would be erected in public spaces for the population to drive nails into in exchange for donations for the armed forces. The city of Hamm decided that their object would be a statue of Count Adolf I von der Mark who founded the city in 1226.
