Previously considered to have been tram tokens produced for use in Adelaide, Australia under the auspices of prominent local businessman Osmond Gilles, this theory was disproven some time ago not least because Mr Gilles had passed in 1866, with horse-drawn trams not being introduced to Adelaide until 1875!
The firm of Osborne Garrett & Co. were hairdressers' sundriesmen with premises in Frith Street, Soho and Cornwall Street in Birmingham. In the early 20th century there was an exodus of hairdressers from Great Britain to other parts of the British Empire such as South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, who continued to order their supplies from firms such as Osborne Garrett, which explains why tokens such as the present piece are often found in quantity in these Commonwealth countries today.
