Highly regarded in the Levant and thus often traded at a higher value than they commanded in Europe, imitative luigino such as the present piece were first struck by such figures as the Prince of Orange and the Princess of Dombes, while sometime later widespread production by the Dutch, French, Genoese and other Italian states of often highly debased examples with satirical mottoes in place of the legends led to the luigino being boycotted by English merchants and their exchange rate to drop dramatically.
