Nimbate bust of Christ facing, raising right hand in benediction and holding Gospels in left. Rev. Obscure legend in three lines within dotted circle. Butak 104.Casanova pl. 111, 1-2. Schlumberger 3-5. Whelan Type A. Cf. Obolos 17 lot 872 for a similar reverse. Brown patina. Nearly very fine.
The legend on this coin is nonsensical but seems to derive from Whelan's Type A dirhem of Amir Ghazi, with the obverse legend [OMEΓAC] / AMHPAC / AMHPΓA / ZHC ("[The Great] / amir / Amir Gha/zi"). Whelan's Type A depicts the nimbate bust of Christ facing, as here, but because of the debased legend, it is unclear whether this represents a new type for Amir Ghazi or is simply an imitation.
