CHINA, Kingdom of Kucha (Qiūcí). 5th-6th centuries AD. Æ 'Wu zhu' (21mm, 1.96 g, 6h). Uncertain Brahmi legend / Wu Zhu in zhuànshū Hànzì (seal script) characters. BN Chinoises II 1005-6; Hartill 10.48. Green and red patina. Near VF.
From the Todd Hansen Collection, purchased from Scott Semans.
The Kingdom of Kucha was at one of the several oases along the silk road. The coinage of this kingdom is still poorly understood: the few finds of the coins in dateable context leave the chronology mostly hypothetical, and the non-Chinese half of the legend remains unread.
