COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS. BRITISH MEDALS. Edmund Halley (1656-1742), astronomer and mathematician, Copper Medal, 1744, by J A Dassier, bewigged bust right wearing academic gown, rev legend within ornate border, ASTRONOMUS REGIS MAGNAE BRITANNIAE MDCCXLIV, 54.5mm (MI 589/235; Eimer 589; Eisler II, 296, 18). Extremely fine, scarce.
Halley was educated at St Paul's School and Queen's College, Oxford, in 1673, before journeying to St Helena where, on the 7th November 1677, he observed a transit of Mercury. His name is given to the comet the periodicity of which he first calculated in 1705.
