The portrait is taken from a wax by Joachim Smith. John Smart is recognised as one of the greatest English miniaturists. Daphne Foskett, "John Smart, the man and his Miniatures", believes that the medals were produced in 1777 to celebrate Smart's appointment as Vice-President of the Incorporated Society of Artists.
