Deutschland - Staaten - Brandenburg - Preussen - Joachim I (1499-1535) - ¼ Taler 1524, Stendal (Bahrfeldt 306b, Appel (1822) nr.3, Dannenberg (ZfN 1881) nr.47, Walte/Bahrfeldt (1881) nr.14) - Obv: (eagle's head) IOAC. PRIN. ELEC. MAR. BRA.; Half-length draped bust right with hat, sceptre on right shoulder / Rev: IOAC. PRIN. ELEC. MAR. BAR ; 4-fold arms with central shield, date above - Silver 29.3mm 4.69 g. - once folded or cracked, possibly restored, a.VF, extremely rare coin
This coin is in our opinion a very rare variety of the already rare 'normal' Stendal ¼ Taler 1524. The weight of this coin is 4.69 gram, which is significantly lower than the usual weight. Also the legend on the reverse is different; with IOAC. PRIN. ELEC. MAR. BAR. it's almost the same as the obverse. Appel describes it as a possible Zwittermünze. The specific weight of the coin is 5.9. An XRF analysis of the coin revealed a 91.7% silver content.
