LOWER DANUBE. Uncertain tribe. 3rd century BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 3.16 g, 11 h), imitating an issue of Alexander III from Lampsakos. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞAΛΔ[...] Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, star. Cf. Price 1350 (for prototype). A lovely imitation of early style. Very fine.
An interesting minor detail about this coin is the topknot Zeus appears to be wearing - perhaps this was a fashionable hairstyle in the artist's environment?
