INDIA, Gupta Empire. First Dynasty. Kumaragupta I Mahendraditya, circa 413-455. Drachm (Silver, 13 mm, 2.12 g, 8 h). Bust of Kumarugupta as Makugupta to right, wearing headdress and earring. Rev. PARAMA BHAGAVATA MAHARAJADHIRAJA SRI MAKUGUPTA MAHENDRATIYA ('Great King, Lord Makugupta Mahendratiya the highest stage devotee [of Vishnu]' in Brahmi) Garuda standing facing on cloud with spread wings. Apparently unpublished and unique, a very interesting issue. Leu Numismatik Web Auction 15 (2021), 987. Very rare. Light scratches, otherwise, good very fine.


The name Makugupta, which is clearly visible on the reverse, is either a new epithet for Kumaragupta, or the new name for a hitherto unattested Gupta King who ruled after him.
