Georgios, apo hypaton and genikos kommerkiarios of the warehouse of First and Second Cilicia. Seal (Lead, 34 mm, 22.08 g, 12 h), dated IY 9 and 10, 694/695. [Γ]ЄⲰPΓIOV - AΠO VΠA[TⲰN]; in field to left, 'indiction' symbol; in field to right, years H and Θ Justinian II standing facing, wearing crown with cross, divitision and chlamys, and holding globus cruciger in his right hand. Rev. [ΓЄ]NIK૪ KO/[M]MЄPKIAPI/[O]V AΠOΘIKH/[C] A S B KHΛ/HKIAC in five lines. Lihacev, Datirovannie, p. 178-179, no. 9 = Zacos/Veglery p. 180, note 2 (poorly preserved, name and dignity uncertain). An impressive kommerkiarios seal with a beautiful depiction of Justinian II. Minor surface roughness, otherwise, good very fine.

'Apothekai' were places where taxes in kind were collected and stored, and which served as centers for the trade and exchange of goods. They were headed by kommerkiarioi, who were assigned to their lucrative position for a fixed period of time - usually one year, but sometimes two years, as is the case with our seal. Only kommerkiarioi were entitled to use imperial portraits on their seals, except of course from the emperor himself. Zacos/Veglery have summarized Georgios' career in their Table 8 on p. 152-154. He is attested on numerous seals dated to the reigns of Justinian II and Leontius.
