Anonymous, circa 12th-14th centuries. Medallion (Bronze, 42 mm, 1.59 g), repoussée. Θ - ΔH/MH/TPI/OC Facing bust of Saint Demetrios, holding spear in his right hand and resting his left hand on his sword. Rev. Incuse of obverse. Some flan cracks, otherwise, very fine.
Quite a few examples of Byzantine repoussé metalwork survive, mostly from the 12th-15th centuries. Evidently, these thin sheets of metal were once fixed onto objects like caskets or processional crosses.
