As koiaistor, Michael Atzumes was a high palace official. He is attested as domestikos of the Anatolikon theme from 1311 to 1315/19 and as pansebastos sebastos and koiasistor in 1315-1319. He was one of the addressees of the prolific scribe Michael Gabras and a benefactor of the poet Manuel Philes of Ephesos.
