Charles Florange's Copy, Heavily Annotated by Richard Margolis
Ciani, P. LES MONNAIES FRANÇAISES DE LA RÉVOLUTION À LA FIN DU PREMIER EMPIRE, 1789 À 1815. Paris, 1931. Tall 8vo, later green half morocco; spine lettered in gilt; original printed paper covers bound in. (2), viii, (2), 168 pages; illustrated; large folding table of French mints laid in. Heavily annotated throughout in pencil by Richard Margolis, with various inserts (notes, photocopies, photographs) laid in and occasionally pasted in. Inscribed to Charles Florange by Pio Ciani on the half title. One signature sprung; else near fine. A fantastic copy of this notable work: inscribed to Charles Florange by the author, Pio Ciani, it was later in the library of Richard Margolis, who for many years used it as his notation copy, in which he recorded new discoveries, made emendations and corrections, and entered his own thoughts on the subject (a note written toward the front of the volume indicates that some of the notes were made long ago and had not necessarily been revised). The inserts provide photographic representations of important pieces, photocopies from catalogues, and original clippings. The 1931 Ciani volume is a significant publication on the subject, and is much scarcer than the similar works on earlier French coinage written by his brother Louis. Unlisted in Clain-Stefanelli. Ex Charles Florange Library; ex Richard E. Margolis Library.
