Letter from David d'Angers
David, Pierre-Jean [David d'Angers]. HANDWRITTEN LETTER, SIGNED, DATED 5 FÉVRIER 1851. Written in ink on one side [11 by 17 cm] of a sheet of folded notepaper. Folded for mailing; early ink stamp with ink notation by A. Juncker. Fine. A brief note from this famous artist, reading: "Je me rendrai avec bien du plaisir à l'aimable invitation que veut bien me faire, mon cher et très honorable collègue. / Croyez, cher ami, a mon entier dévouement de coeur, David d'Angers." While the recipient is unknown, the letter includes a beautifully elaborate signature of David. Pierre-Jean David (1788–1856), known professionally as David d'Angers, was a French sculptor who became particularly appreciated for his portrait medallions, which are avidly collected by numismatists today.
