Folkes's Classic Compendium on English Coins
Folkes, Martin. ENGLISH COINAGE, SILVER AND GOLD, FAITHFULLY COPIED FROM THE ORIGINALS. SILVER - FROM THE NORMAN CONQUEST TO QUEEN ANNE (740 COINS). GOLD - FROM EDWARD II. TO WILLIAM II. (256 COINS). SUPPLEMENT (207 COINS). 67 PLATES, WITH 1203 COINS, AND THEIR REVERSES. (London, c. 1863). 4to, later brown quarter calf, gilt; spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; original printed paper cover mounted on front board. (2), 4 pages; 42 + 19 + 6 engraved plates. Untrimmed. Minor spotting; near fine. A well-preserved example of this edition, which is a bit of a bibliographical mystery. To quote Manville, this is "an undated reprinting of the plates from the 1762–3 edition of Tables of English Silver and Gold Coins and Ruding's three editions of 1817, 1819 and 1840, preceded by a list of contents (pp. 1–4). Although sometimes dated to the 1870s, this may be a centenary volume." Includes early engraved representations of North American colonial coins. Manville 426.
