Major Work on English Medals
(Pinkerton, John: generally ascribed to). THE MEDALLIC HISTORY OF ENGLAND TO THE REVOLUTION. First edition. London: Printed for Edwards and Sons, 1790. Folio [34 by 27.5 cm], contemporary tree calf boards, later rebacked in plain brown calf. iv, 112 pages; 40 engraved plates of medals. An ex-library copy, with ink stamps throughout. Binding worn; rebacking amateurish. Very good or so. A notable 18th-century work on English medals. The preface notes that "This work is the first which lays before the Reader a complete series of English Medals down to the Revolution" and thanks Dr. Combe for the use of "his capital Collection of Prints and Drawings of English Medals" and for his "several explanations in the descriptions." Leitzmann 105 (listing the 1802 edition only, but giving the 1790 title). Manville 224. Ex Grimsby Public Library.
