Classic Work on Ypres, in a Presentation Binding
Vandenpeereboom, Alphonse. ESSAI DE NUMISMATIQUE YPROISE. Bruxelles: Fr. Gobbaerts, 18774to [31 by 23 cm], original red half morocco with double gilt fillets; spine with five raised bands, ruled, and richly decorated in gilt, with presentation lettering to I. Diegerick (see comments); marbled sides and endpapers; top page edges gilt. (4), 378 pages; 42 engraved plates signed by P. de Cleermaecker. Binding rubbed at extremities; occasional browning and other signs of age. Very good or better. Laid in are several association items, including: a duplicated 1877 letter from the author presenting this work; a May 1879 newspaper review of Vandenpeereboom's Notices, études, notes et documents sur Ypres (1879); a menu ("pour 500 couverts") printed in red and gold, of an 1868 dinner given in honor of the author; and an engraved letter dated 1 août 1885 fron the executor of Vandenpeereboom's estate forwarding a lithographic portrait of the late numismatist, which is also included. One of 25 large-paper copies printed on papier royal. First published in various volumes of the Revue belge de numismatique, Vandenpeereboom's Essai remains the classic work on the numismatic history of Ypres. The author (1812–1884) was a Minister of State, President of the Société archéologique d'Ypres, and an active member of the Société royale belge de numismatique. His seven-volume Ypriana was published between 1878 and 1883 and drew extensively upon his personal collections of manuscripts, documents, coins and other material artefacts of Ypres. Bequeathed to the city, his collections were destroyed during the First World War. This copy was bound for the author's colleague Isidore Diegerick, a fellow member of many of the historical societies in which Vandenpeereboom was active. Cumont 2014.
