The Tokens of South London
Waters, Arthur W. THE TOKEN COINAGE OF SOUTH LONDON ISSUED IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES. WITH INTRODUCTION AND NOTES. Leamington Spa: Simmons & Waters, 1904. Small 8vo, original maroon quarter morocco, gilt; spine lettered in gilt; top page edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait; xiv, 33, (1) pages; 2 fine autotype plates of tokens; folding facsimile; 3 lithographic plates. Inscribed by the author to Fred Shaw & Co. Spine worn, particularly at base; contents fine. Very good. One of only 100 copies printed. A scholarly and at times entertaining essay on this interesting numismatic backwater, leavened by some marvelously obscure literary and historical references. A total of fifty-four tokens are described. The inscription is dated January 13, 1904. Davisson, Handbook: "This is a detailed discussion of these pieces including news reports and material written at the time the tokens were issued." Manville 629.
