1859 Hodges on Genuine Bank Notes
Hodges, J. Tyler. HODGES' GENUINE BANK NOTES OF AMERICA. THE ONLY ORIGINAL AND CORRECT WORK EVER PUBLISHED, EXCEPT THE BANK NOTE SAFE-GUARD, GIVING PLAIN, SUCCINCT, AND RELIABLE DESCRIPTIONS OF EVERY GENUINE BANK NOTE OF EVERY DENOMINATION ON EVERY BANK IN THE UNITED STATES & CANADA... New-York: 1859. 4to [29.5 by 22.5 cm], later brown half morocco, gilt, with brown linen sides; original blindstamped dark brown cloth, gilt-stamped with title, trimmed and mounted on front board; spine with two raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt. 39, (1) pages. A worn copy, with staining throughout and some marginal repairs; an area of about two square inches is clipped out of one leaf. Good only, but in a handsome binding. Exceptionally rare, lacking from the Fuld, Champa and Bass Libraries. This interesting volume was published by Hodges in lieu of the usual Bank Note Safe-Guard for 1859, and is very rarely seen, with the examples from the Newman and Ford Libraries being the only other copies of which we are aware to have appeared in a numismatic auction. Not listed in Sigler or the American Numismatic Society Dictionary Catalogue. Dillistin page 144: "This publication followed the same format as that of Thompson's list. Apparently they both first appeared in 1859. Just who was the originator of this type of publication is not known. While it appears that Thompson issued at least thirty-one editions of his descriptive list, only one edition of Hodge's list was found." Ex Heather Hardin-Hudson Library, previously in the Michael Sullivan Library (February 2017 Charles Davis sale, lot 614).
