Original Coin Scale Advertising Placard
Infallible Coin Scale Co. THE INFALLIBLE COIN SCALE: RENDERS THE DETECTION OF COUNTERFEITS CERTAIN. Printed advertising placard [26.5 by 20.5 cm], mounted on red wooden shingle [29 by 24 cm] with wall mount on rear. Marginal chipping to top of placard; some roughness to shingle, especially at lower right. An eye-catching display item that is for the most part well-preserved. A fun piece of numismatic wall art. The advertisement ran in 1882 in Harper's Weekly, and is depicted in Eric P. Newman and A. George Mallis's 1999 U.S. Coin Scales and Mechanical Counterfeit Detectors, the main work on the subject (on page IV-2-8), but appears to have also been distributed as a wall sign: a similar example was sold in the John J. Ford, Jr. sale, Part XXIII, lot 22991. Ex Heather Hardin-Hudson Collection.
