Bid Book for Proskey's First Sale
Proskey, David. CATALOGUE OF PART OF A PRIVATE COLLECTION OF COINS AND MEDALS. New York, September 14–15, 1876. 8vo, original printed paper covers. 54, (2) pages; 1232 lots. Annotated throughout in pencil, including prices realized and buyers' names or initials, along with other computations and notes. Covers a bit discolored. Near fine. Proskey's bid book. Unique. "Private DP" written in ink on upper cover. The first of only five sales held by Proskey, who was perhaps, according to John Adams, "the most talented numismatist the United States has produced." Also included are two sheets of sale computations, the original $98.50 printer's invoice for "500 coin catalogues," and the handwritten statement of Bangs, Merwin, the auction house conducting the sale, recapping charges of $65.51 for conducting the sale, marked "Paid" by Proskey.
