Finely Bound Large-Paper Copy, Priced
Woodward, W. Elliot. PRICED CATALOGUE OF SELECTED SPECIMENS OF COINS AND MEDALS, FROM THE AMERICAN PORTION OF THE COLLECTIONS OF HENRY M. BROOKS, ESQ., JEREMIAH COLBURN, ESQ., REV. J.M. FINOTTI, DR. EDWARD M. FIELD, AND DR. AUGUSTINE SHURTLEFF. New York: Bangs, April 28–May 1, 1863. 4to [32 by 26.5 cm], modern brown half speckled calf with marbled sides; spine with six raised bands, ruled and decorated in gilt; black and red spine labels lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers; original printed paper covers bound in. 112 pages, interleaved; 2569 lots; price realized printed alongside each lot. Store card section annotated in pencil. Fine. A lovely copy of the Special Interleaved Large Paper Edition. This important sale, Woodward's second semi-annual auction, is rated A by Adams and features superb colonials, Washingtonia, large cents, store cards, etc. Indeed, the sale was entirely composed of American numismatic items, and it totaled $4,024.66, a new record. In his introductory comments, Woodward notes: "A few copies of this Catalogue, on large, extra fine and heavy paper, interleaved, can be furnished at $2.00 each..." The annotations in the store card section, lots 1296–1819 (rated B+ by Adams), are most interesting, including corrections and expanded descriptions of some lots, an added lot (1503 1/2: "Idler, W. Head of Geo. Washington"), also added lots following 1666, 1688 & 1766, notes on metallic composition, and so forth. Adams 5. Attinelli 29.
