Aubrey Bebee's Annotated Contributor Copy in a Blank Binding
Yeoman, R.S. A GUIDE BOOK OF UNITED STATES COINS. 11th (1958) edition. Racine: Whitman, 1957. 12mo, original red leatherette, gilt. 254, (2) pages; text illustrations. Extensively annotated in ink by Aubrey Bebee from page 59 to the end (the federal coinage and following). The binding is the usual red leatherette, but is completely blank: no gilt at all. Endpapers discolored. Very good. A fascinating contributor's copy, the first we recall seeing in this form. The book itself is simply a regular 11th edition Red Book: it is not interleaved, inscribed, or anything else. The binding, however, is plain red leatherette, identical to any other 11th edition Red Book except that it is blank, with no gilt on it at all. While we have seen copies as early as the 15th edition with similarly blank covers, those copies were interleaved. This copy has been used by Aubrey Bebee to update the pricing information for the 12th edition Red Book. His name is not in it, but our consignor purchased it from Orville Grady, who had acquired a large number of books from the Bebees, including this one.
