USA. The famous 1857-S double eagle in CAC MS65+
Metal: Gold (0.900). Weight: 33.44 grams. Diametre: 34 mm.
The 1857-S double eagle was considered as a common coin during many years. Most of them were in VF/EF, some in AU and very few of them in mint state.
The famous S.S. Central America were lost at sea in 1857. When the shipwreck was found in 1987 it was containing one of the most important treasure ever found. It included more than 5,400 double eagles 1857-S . Nearly all of them in mint state. This is presumably the origin of this one. This incredible quantity in high-end condition kicked-started the market and created a very strong interest for this date. Garrett and Guth (2005) included the 1857-S among the 100 greatest US coins.
It is now quite easy to find this coin in grades up to MS 64. Higher grades such as this one become much more elusive.
The large interest for this important date increased not only its investment value but also its collecting and historical value.
