MUGHAL: Alamgir II, 1754-1759, AR rupee (11.43g), Lahore, AH1171 year 5, KM-460.13, special strike on broad flan, nazarana style, very likely produced for presentation purposes, EF, R. This rupee was struck by the Marathas in name of the Mughal emperor Alamgir II during the Maratha occupation of Lahore. On 20 April 1758 / 11 Sha'ban 1171, Malharrao Holkar and Raghunathrao attacked and conquered Lahore. Hodivala gives the accession date of Alamgir II as 10 Sha'ban 1167 (or 1 Sha'ban for official purposes), so the fifth regnal year would commence on 11 Sha'ban 1171, causing these scarce rupees dated AH 1171-year-5 and AH 1172-year-5 to be assigned as Maratha issues. The city returned to Mughal rule less than a year later.
