BRITISH INDIA: George III, 1760-1820, AE medal (29.19g), 1761, Pud-761.1, 39.3 mm, head of King George III r. / Victory standing, writing on the shield, between two palm trees, inscribed "Pondicherry taken MDCCLXI, total expulsion of the French from India", cuds on both sides, tiny indentations in the center on both sides, EF, R. The names Coote and Steevens, engraved by Victory on her shield, refer to the two British commanders in the successful siege and victory at Pondicherry (1760-1761). Pondicherry was returned to the French in 1763.
