BRITISH INDIA: Victoria, Queen, 1837-1876, AV 5 rupees, 1870 (c), KM-479, Prid-37, early proof restrike, much rarer than the later restrike, PCGS graded PF63 CAM, RRR, ex Baldwin's Auction 74, lot 1356 (not described as early restrike).

This piece is of what Pridmore (pp. 90-91) describes as the first period of proof restrikes (circa 1890-1905), which are easily distinguished from the later proof restrikes (circa 1947-1970), as they retain the high quality of the original proofs, with rims that are still horizontal and not bezeled as on the later restrikes. Regarding the first period of restrikes, Pridmore states that "this class is difficult to determine from those struck for official purposes," i.e., the original official proofs. Joe and I immediately realized that this piece is not one of the later proof restrikes, but could be an original proof. After reading Pridmore's interesting and convincing analysis, I am confident that this cannot be a later restrike, and is more likely a first period proof, less likely an original.

Estimate: 11000-13000 USD
