Octavian (44-28 BC), Plated denarius (?), Italy: uncertain mint (Brundisium and Rome ?), 29-27 BC; AR (g 3,31; mm 20; h 9); Laureate head of Apollo r., Rv. Octavian, veiled and laureate, holding whip and ploughing with yoke of oxen to r.; in ex. IMP CAESAR / control mark (?). RIC 272; C 117.
Dark patina, good very fine.

This interesting specimen is in good condition, but the control-letter on the reverse in exergue, absent in the rest of the specimens known, might betray the plated nature of the piece. Probably, in fact, plated denarii were made by counterfeiters who worked in formal structures, which altered the original dies at their disposal with minimal stylistic variant not officially recognized: "A ben vedere grazie a quelle piccole differenze nessuno avrebbe mai potuto dimostrare in un processo per frode monetaria che quelle monete falsificate erano state realizzate all'interno delle strutture della zecca incolpando quindi le persone che vi lavoravano". See L. Pedroni "L'intenzionalità dell'errore nei falsi monetarii repubblicani", RN 1996, pp. 95-103.
