EMPORION (Ampurias, Gerona) .Obolo. (Ar. 0.93g / 12mm). 5th century BC (ca.). (Villaronga 1, 4-1; Amorós 16). Anv: Head with lion skin on the right, legend behind. Rev: Lion rampant to the right, looking to the left, below the letter EV (E inverted). Almost Extremely Fine. The obverse of this coin emulates the archaic mints of the Phocaean polis (600-550 BC), later also imitated in the former Phocaean colony of Velia (520-500 BC). Very rare and precious specimen, similar to lot 156 of the 02/27/2002 auction by Aureo & Calicó awarded for \u20ac 1,300.
