German East Africa 2.9.1912 P-5 PCGS Extremely Fine 40 500 Rupien
A great rarity of the 20th century, and one of the final notes of the era preceding the first World War. German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II is portrayed at front and is flanked by intricate and beautiful engravings by Giesecke & Devrient. This highest denomination note was printed and issued in small batches, hence its rarity and desirability today. Official figures show jus 696 pieces released into circulation. A scant few examples remain in the collector realm, and many German and African collections are missing this elusive note. The first we have offered and one of only a handful to appear on the market in recent years. An iconic and very rare African banknote, and especially desirable due to its designs and links to Europe and colonialism. PCGS acknowledges minor margin repairs, which are found on all high grade examples of this type we have seen. PCGS mentions "Minor edge restoration".
