Fatimid, 'al-Muntazar' (fictive caliph, 524-526h), dinar, al-Iskandariya 525h, obv., in inner margin: Abu'l-Qasim al-Muntazar bi-amr Allah Amir al-Mu'minin; in centre: al-Imam | Muhammad, 4.41g (Nicol 2589), light crease, slight edge damage, otherwise good very fine and rare. Coins naming al-Muntazar were struck by Kutayfat, the son of al-Amir's vizier, who seized power after al-Amir's death in 524h. Kutayfat neatly sidestepped the problem of not being from the Fatimid line by proclaiming the sovereignty of al-Mahdi, the twelfth imam of the Twelver Shi'is, whose coming had been expected for more than 250 years. This meant that Kutayfat could declare the Fatimid dynasty ended, while also allowing him to rule without being answerable to any earthly authority. Nevertheless, Kutayfat was deposed and executed in 526h, being succeeded by the Fatimid heir, al-Hafiz.
