Prow right; before, S; below, ROMA. Cf. Cr. 240/2b; Cf. B. 3. AE. 5.30 g. 21.00 mm. RRR. Rare and very interesting example. Golden brown patina, with green spots. F.

The coinage of the period of the Roman Republic seldom contains countermarks. There are some sporadic instances of countermarks being placed upon Republican coins still in circulation during the Empire. (R. Baker, ACCLA, August 2004).
The bronzes of C. Cvr F without victory can without doubt be assigned to the unofficial issues dated after 82 for the following reasons: 1) The coarse style which is completely different to the 'with victory' issue. 2) The weights are decisively lighter compared to the others. 3) While the official series is complete from semis to uncia, the only known denominations for this issue are the semis and the quadrans (the triens without victory is mentioned by Crawford only on the basis of what was cited by Babelon and its existence is yet to be confirmed). (NAC 61, RBW Coll. 2011, lot 988 note).
